What do I mean by 'attentive'

It is too easy to not be attentive, to tune out or focus on something else when others (especially children) are communicating with us. We might be talking with another person, or thinking about something important to us, maybe even daydreaming (due to any number of reasons - mine is usually chronic mild dehydration). How do we feel when our words go unheard, our actions unnoticed, our questions o r requests ignored? What do we learn as this happens again and again, about ourselves, others, relationships and communication?

I talk and write a lot about being attentive. It dawned on me recently that perhaps people don't understand what I mean. To me it means simply tuning in, noticing, focusing, being mindful, putting all of your attention into this one moment with this one person, giving them your whole attention, listening and observing carefully.

Now if everyone did that to everyone, wow! I really honestly think it would make a huge difference to how we relate to one another. Maybe even make world peace a possibility?
