Resources for learning about 1800s Australia

Please note: Australian history is extremely whitewashed. Despite Aboriginal people living here when Captain Cook arrived, the country was declared Terra Nullius - meaning unoccupied. This resulted both in the colonisation of the country for settlement and as a penal colony and also led to the large scale genocide and enslavement of Aboriginal people. Terra Nullius was not overturned until 1992! Australia has only legally recognised that Aboriginal people inhibited Australia prior to European settlement since then. As such, our laws, culture, and history reflect this.

Aboriginal society, culture, architecture, science etc was completely erased from our history books and replaced with a made up story of how Aboriginal people lived prior to colonisation.

As such, I STRONGLY recommend people read the book/s Dark Emu by Bruce Pascoe (middle school and up) and Young Dark Emu by Bruce Pascoe (elementary school) before looking into Australian history as these books are based off of journals, letters, and other sources from people who lived in Australia during colonisation and the 1800s.

This will help give you a truer understanding of Aboriginal society and help you to see the gaps and whitewashing in most Australian history resources.
